SCUBA DIVING
|
An
underwater paradise awaits you. The
waters surrounding Muscat provide some of the best tropical
coral sea diving in the world. The nutrient-rich water
attracts a wide variety and large quantity of marine life. 85
varieties of hard and soft corals are found here, huge table
corals, beautiful black coral, and colorful whip and
teddy-bear corals. The sea is also abundant with 900 species
of fish, including the enormous whale shark. So numerous and
varied is the fish population in the waters of Oman that new
species continue to be
discovered.
There are no strong currents in this part of the Arabian Sea
so diving is both fun and easy for the beginner and
experienced diver alike. The diving is based on rock and coral
sites with a few coral-covered wrecks. The dive sites are all
within easy reach of the coast.
Dive trips and destinations vary on any given day and are
subject to sea conditions and the experience of the diving
group. Attempts will be made to give all divers varied
destinations on each outing, however guarantees cannot be
given for visits to specific areas.

DIVING SITES IN OMAN
|
Bander Khyran
The capital area's weekend getaway spot.
A fjord system is located twenty minutes by boat to the south
of Muscat. Beautiful corals line the bays and secluded
beaches.
Fahal
Island
Plunging to depths of over 40 metres,
Fahal or "Shark" Island offers some of the best diving around
the Muscat capital area. Two wrecks are located at the
north-east corner of the Island and a tunnel known as the Blu-tube
runs through the centre.
Ras Abu
Daud
A small chain of islands with steep
walls on the east and shallow reefs on the western side.
Perfect for both novice and advanced divers.
Ten minutes from the Quriyat wreck, a freighter in sixteen
meters of water probably Oman’s most popular wreck dived on a
regular basis.
Daymaniyat
Islands Marine Park
A chain of islands to the north of
Muscat. A nature reserve offering reefs from five to thirty
meters and a lot of life to go with them. Special trips are
regularly arranged here as access is limited.
The Al-Munassir
Sank by the Royal Navy of Oman, the Al-Munassir
lies off the coast in the Bander Khyran area. Donated to Oman
by the Royal Navy, the Al-Munassir was sunk to create an
artificial reef in Oman waters. The wreck is easily
accessible. From the upper deck there are two vertical lift
shafts down to the lower deck where most of the rooms to port
and starboard are open. The bridge including the wheelhouse,
ops room and communications room can be explored. Because of
the abundant marine life in Oman waters, the Al-Munassir will
create a spectacular artificial reef. |
